Out of School/ Dropout Children In Dharwad District, Karnataka State: A Geographical Study

Although India has made a remarkable progress in the field of literacy and education
during the preceding decades (1991-2011) and it has achieved 74.04% of literacy as per
2011 census, yet the task of universalising the elementary education in the country is not
complete. Since, even today 40% of the children are out of school or deprived of elementary
education. In the study area of Dharwad district also number of dropouts in increasing year
by year. If it continues at the same rate, at least two results of the dropout situation are
threats to the society as well as to the individual concerned. One is delinquent and criminal
behavior. And second concern of the society lies in the vicious circle of the same kinds of
families being reproduced in the subsequent generations.
With the numbers of dropouts growing now, there is urgent need to address the problem.
Thus, the present piece of work makes an effort to study present scenario of dropout children
in Dharwad district of Karnataka State with the help of simple statistical methods by
conducting field survey and by collecting secondary data with an aim that by studying the
causes and effects the problem of dropouts in Dharwad district, we can suggest better
measures for its minimization
